Sept 1st v Clwb Rygbi
Although 2nd Team Captain Peter Mees was not available (pick as a 1st Team Substitute) his tireless work over the summer ensured a good squad of players were available for the visti to Cardiff for their opening game. In fact the Sports were able to lend two players to Clwb Rygbi who had only been able to muster 13 players.
The game was fast, open and played in a great spirit with tries coming thick and fast. The Sports opened the scoring after 3 minutes, and except for a couple of minutes just after half-time enjoyed a slender lead as both teams scored regularly. But with 3 minutes left, Clwb launched a long range attack to score a spectacular converted try to take the lead for the 1st time by 2 points. The Sports hit back almost immediately and Scott Mills charged down a clearance kick in the home 22, caught the ball and scored under the posts.
The remaining minute was comfortably seen out by the Sports for a very entertaining and well earned victory.
The Sports scored 4 tries to 3 to lead 22 - 17 at half time, with tries coming from scrumhalf Mike Saunders (2), winger Shane Evans, fullback Rob Morgan and No 8 Scott Mills adding a conversion. In an evenly contested 2nd half both teams added two tries and a conversion apiece, with winger Wayne Jones and Scott Mills getting the Sports’ tries, and outside half Gareth Barnfield kicking a conversion.
The Sports showed a good blend of experienced and young/novice players, and when all the unavailable players in the Club return from injury/holidays it should boost, both the 1st & 2nd team squads
